What kind of student are you looking for?
The Media Design Lab consists of students from various fields such as fine arts, sociology,
science, engineering, and working professionals. Many of the students hold degrees in fine arts,
design, cinema, and architecture. For the working professional students, they came from
companies such as publishing, advertisement, electric appliances, information technology. I
believe it is better to have students from various fields to collaborate in projects and research.

What kind of ability is required for the research?
It is preferable if you have knowledge in computing, information network, design, and fine arts, but also ability in composition and thesis writing. It is even better if you know any programming
languages to research and develop. Recently, we also have projects involving electronic handicraft and design.

How should I advance my research?
First of all, you should read other research papers on the topics that you are interested in. And, as a member of the research, you need to possess skills such as programming, designing, writing, or project planning. Most of all, you need to be able to communicate and cooperate effectively with other students or an enterprise. Lastly, you need to have the physical strength to go to the laboratory everyday.

What are the career option in Media Design?
The graduates from this laboratory either continue their research in the doctoral program or get a job in the following enterprises: Dentsu Co.,Ltd., Hakuhodo Co.,Ltd., Nissan Co.,Ltd., Sony Co.,Ltd., Sharp Co.,Ltd., NTT DoCoMo Co.,Ltd., NHK enterprise......and so on. They work as a designer, a director/planner of an advertising agency, a producer of a broadcasting company, or a research of an electronic maker in the fields of multimedia and information technology. There is an alumni who is an artist that owns a personal company and manages a production company. Some students enter the doctoral program in Waseda university and Tokyo university too.

Which country does an oversea student come from?
There are many international students who enroll in / graduated from this laboratory.They come from Sweden, Norway, America, Canada, China, Taiwan, and South Korea. There are many inquiries about entering this program from other countries, too. Although the official languages for the research are Japanese and English, you will occasionally hear Chinese and Korean in a daily conversation. Moreover, a short-term researcher and an exchange student from an oversea graduate school are accepted in this laboratory.

How should I discuss about the entrance examination?
You can contact Professor Ikuro Choh or the admission office of the graduate school of Intermedia Art and Science or Global Information and Telecommunication Studies by Email or the following form. You will need to include in the E-mail with your career, your subject and purpose of the research as well. Also, please ask the Faculty of Science and Engineering about an entrance examination to the Department of Intermedia and Art and Science.

Can you discuss about joint research and other advices?
We have co-researched with enterprises, the local government, and research agencies within the country and overseas. In addition, I am working as a guest researcher and professor in a foreign university. You should contact the professor directly requesting for a joint research. Please hold back your inquiry over the telephone because I am often absent from the laboratory for school duties and oversea business trip.
