IKuro Choh,Ph.D.

Dr. Ikuro Choh finished Tokyo National University of the Arts. Doctor of art and design. Professor of Waseda University Graduate School of the Global Information and Telecommunication Studies. The head of Waseda University Institute of Media Design. He studies theories of visualization for art and design. And he has an interest in researching and developing design system with sensitive devices and visualization of behavioral information for Internet and computer media.

Media Design Study

While understanding the current status and the concepts of universal designs and global designs, which are the roots of social demand in today's arts and design fields, this unit studies the contributions and problems of production technologies and multimedia in this area. Here, barrier free and non-verbal designs are the keywords, as well as new patterns and methods of design, such as visual displays and mobile computing systems, etc. after graphical user interface(GUI) based on today's iconography. This unit also aims at the visualization of nonspace information by incorporating knowledge and the senses and applying basic concepts, and its problem solving methods of designing technology, its patterns, cognitive science and sensory engineering, using sensory displays, etc. based on sensory functions. This unit also covers the research and development of interactive design production subsystems(meta-design system) of information visualization, and at the construction of image databases, etc. in the arts and design fields.

1)Advanced visualization and visual evaluation
Media design, Visualization of invisible object, Research of contemporary art

2)System construction and structuralization of information
User interface design, Evaluation of usability and accessibility, Design management

Design Aided System Studies (Legible Design System)
The representation of the today's art and design does not expose the structure of mechanistic theory in the past. That is to say, it has the invisible structure, and has shifted to cognitive form which stimulates a sense more naturally. In the excessively artificial environment of today, taking into account the validity of legibility and tangibility, more legible and tangible design is needed. In the field of computer media, besides realizing the traditional representation and its process, design and its system which take advantage of computer media are especially sought for.

Interface Design Studies
As in every design and a product, the relationship between design with excellent usability and human beings is kept in a better interface, the form which stimulates legible and tangible senses. Today, more appropriate usability is being sought by applying concepts and theories of psychology and cognitive science.

Media Art Studies
Interactivity, that is, the advantage of computer and various other media in the present, has been changing not only the past form of art and design but their process of creations and styles. It also affects the state information should be, our lifestyle and our perception of environments. In addition to the styles of representations as in the past, Media Art can be regarded as an transformable art form which infiltrates into more various media.

Contemporary Art Studies
Targeting society and the public, art in the modern age has increased its power of propaganda. One of methods it began to adopt was to make use of better quality and abundance of materials of the day in order to create art works called mixed media and combine art. Besides the improvement of printing technology, the expansion of the media by TV and film produces synergy effect. In this manner, today's art not only explores representation techniques but emphasizes conceptual aspects of the representation. It is significant to understand these situations and relationships in order to foresee the direction of the media.
