Professor Jugnwhan Sung finished Computer Graphics & Interactive media MFA course, Pratt Institute. He had a career as 3D Game Lead Artist at CWN, INC and occupied the President of DENSSO INC. He studies about Content Planning and Media Art and Design in Media Dept, Soongsil University.
 
 
Media Art and Design as being Nature ; what-is-so-of-itself
自然を醸成するメディアアートとデザイン
 
Introduction
  Today art and design surrounding us has been developed with more interaction and interdependence, and we imply significant meaning to interactive relationship between art works and audience. Art doesn’t exist as alone, or completeness by itself, but it does as potentiality that has connection with organism and environment. Design doesn’t have its own role because it exists, but we can find its value and meaning because it has its role within the relationship. Now we can find and look forward to new experience such as strangeness, deformation, and harshness from art and even design, and these new roles of experience ask for new interpretation from aesthetics, like complex, compound, virtual, and floating flexibility. When arts and design meet digital technology, and if we call them media art and media design, interaction and virtual reality becomes more important factors and these features will continue to be emphasized with media. So, interaction between users and media art, and ambiguity of division between virtual reality and presence re-open borders with art and objects of ordinary experience.
  Now we need new standard for interpretation and critics for media art and design. It shouldn’t be dichotomy between the “spiritual” and “matter”. For many persons an aura of mingled awe and unreality encompasses the “spiritual” while “matter” has become by contrast a term of depreciation. So, attempts for new interpretation of these features and roles of media art and design in these days will be meaningful discussion. 
 
Media Art and Design as being Nature ; what-is-so-of-itself
  For better understanding of media art and design, while these are closer to human being’s life, we need to take a look at art and design out of everyday experience, not from gallery and museum. The concept of “Normal Experience” by John Dewey, gives better understanding of relationship between arts and life. From his theory, the first great consideration is that life goes on in an environment; not merely in it but because of it, thorough interaction with it. At every moment, the living creature is exposed to dangers from its surroundings, and at every moment, it must draw upon something in its surroundings to satisfy its needs. The career and destiny of a living being are bound up with its interchanges with its environment, not externally but in the most intimate way. Arts and design, from external imitation of living creatures, nature, and environment, has become to visualize internal and invisible complicate emotion, subjective meaning from organism. We can find out some interaction between these arts and audience, even there is no physical interaction, since information sends back and forth at least more than once between senders and receivers, I still believe there is (psychic) interaction happened. With help of media and digital technologies, arts and design couldn’t even realize psychic but also physical interaction, and these interaction changes roles of audience to actors. Now arts and design only completes when organism has relation with them, and it means that arts and design stops mimicking living creatures, and tries to become nature by themselves. The nature, however, is not a “Nature”, but a “自然 : what-is-so-of-itself”.
